Today Sunrun offers purchase, loan, lease, and PPA options and employs a large network of in-person sales representatives and installation crews. It is the largest residential solar company in the U.S. by installed capacity.

Tesla Solar entered the residential solar market through the 2016 acquisition of SolarCity (itself one of the early residential solar giants). Tesla sells solar exclusively online through its website and app — there are no in-person sales reps. Tesla also manufactures its own Solar Roof (integrated shingles) alongside traditional panel installations. Its Powerwall battery system is among the most recognizable home battery products on the market.

Pricing

Tesla consistently comes in cheaper on a per-watt basis. Typical installed prices:

However, price per watt is not the whole story. Sunrun's higher price sometimes reflects more hand-holding, better in-person support, and more flexible financing. And Tesla's online-only model can mean slower permitting and less responsiveness to on-site complications.

Equipment

Tesla uses its own first-party solar panels and inverters, designed in-house and manufactured to Tesla's specs. This means tight integration but also means you are locked into Tesla's ecosystem. Panel efficiency is competitive but not industry-leading.

Sunrun uses a variety of third-party manufacturers, most commonly Q CELLS, LG, and REC panels paired with SolarEdge or Enphase inverter systems. This gives Sunrun more flexibility to use high-efficiency options and allows customers to choose premium equipment tiers.
